Default 4x4 problems

ok, so i have asked this question already but i havent found any success yet. i own a 97 xlt 4x4 and i cannot get the 4x4 to engage, the shifter inside will not budge at all. i have read where others have said to lube everything underneath the truck which i have done. now the shifter on the floor will move from side to side but it will not pull back at all. is it supposed to pull back from the left or t he right? i have had 4x4's before and they have just pulled staright back. i just cant figure this thing out. also i have a little shimmy in my tranny. i'm young and dont really work on cars much and dont want to really get ripped off at the dealership. if anyone could help me out with this that would be great. thanks guys!

I have not tried the 4x4 in my truck yet, haven't needed to so far. I just bought her in May 07. The 4x4 shifter on the floor has a black handle with a diagram with the 2H, 4H, N and 4L on it. The line between them all is straight so I would think all I would need to do is to pull the lever straight back to engage the 4H. I have read that you need to push the lever down, very hard, while the transmission is in neutral to engage the 4L.

it has the diagram on it, but is the shifter supposed to move side to side say an inch and a half?

There may be some play in it, but I believe that it should slide straight back unless otherwise suggested by the diagram on the ****.

There are some others here with much more experience than I have. They will see this thread and comment on it eventually. It sometimes may take a couple of days, but it will happen.
