I should have known. Is it a heritage or the new body style. The two models use a completely different engagement system in the front axle.

Sounds like that little PITA solenoid on the firewall if its an 04.... it needs the hat. Probably needs the vacumn lines flushed as well.

its wierd the front doesn't seem to fight at all but the rear seems to be. like the front will roll just fine but the back seems to have a herder time pushing the truck like the brake is depressed.

glenhen,

Ford redesigned the disengagement solenoid on the fire wall so water intrusion into the engine compartment would no drip into it and find its way into the IWEs (Independent Wheel End) on the front axle. The way it works is vacuum holds back a spring in the IWE from engaging the front hubs thus keeping the truck in 4x2. Loss of vacuum would allow the front IWEs to engage and give you 4x4. When water is allowed in and finds its way to the IWEs the spring rusts and the lines get clogged and only partial vacuum makes its way to the IWE. This can cause erratic or no engagement or grinding of the splines in the IWE. If they had to clean yours then that might have not been enough. The IWE or Solenoid could be damaged..
