Ok, so I have some intresting issues, When I start my truck(98 f150 scab 5.4l ESOF) the 4x4 and 4low lights come on for a sec, so it is not the bulbs, I am not getting ground to the solenoids from the gem, but then another odd thing is that when I ground the the solenoid the front end locks up but still no 4x4 high, then I put it into 4low and it works(but only with the jumper under the hood). and all the while no lights on the dash at all saying it is in 4low. My main question is what is the order of operation.

esof switch>transfer case motor>shift>signal to gem to lock front diff>4x4 light?

so any ideas?

I have a 2003 scab with the 4.2. When I bought the truck everything seemed as though the 4x4 was working. The lights came on indicating whether I was in 4 hi or 4 low and the clicking could be heard like everything was engaging. However once off road it was clear that the 4x4 was not engaging. I took it to my local shop and apparently a vacuum line had come off somewhere under the hood and that was the only issue. The guys superglued it on and didn't even charge me ( score). That doesn't fix the light issue but could be a starting point for you. Hope this helps.
