Default 4x4 help

got a 97 f150 scab.

Tried to throw it in 4hi a couple days ago in some snow.. and while the stick popped back like normal, felt like it was moving something...

pedal felt like 2wd still and no 4x4 light on the dash (it works at startup during engine diags run by the ecu...)

Its 18 degrees out, I dont need the 4x4, only used it once or twice in the several years I've owned the truck so I'm in no rush to fix it. No CEL. Could it be something like a solonoid on the top of the differential that I could replace easily? I'm pretty mechanically challenged, but I can follow directions. Just looking for possibilities at the moment.

Thanks folks

Well, its not the 4x4 part thats having issues... It is going into 4x4, its just not indicating it on the cluster. Gotta be a relay or something that causes that I educator to light... Where do I find it and how do I test it?

Maybe light bulb is out?

The ground to light the bulbs (4hi & low) is supplied by the GEM

Bulb is good. It lights up when the cluster does the self test.
