Default 4wd question

Okay, 97 F150 4.6. I thought the 4wd wasn't working at all, but I found it has to be in neutral to get the trans case to engage. Have high and low range, front shaft turns. Checked fuse 23, it's good. Have vacuum to the solenoids (?) behind the battery and the hub lock actuator does move by hand. What I don't have that's bothering me now itsthe 4x4 light on the dash. I know it lights up when I start, but what is supposed to make it come on? I checked the range sensor and the contacts are clean, ball moves freely with pressure. I'm sure I'll track down the leak that's keeping the actuator from working, but I'm wondering why the light isn't lighting anymore. Any idea where to start looking?

I believe there is a sensor by your linkage. Also if your actuator isnt fully engaging your sytem, the light wont come on. When my linkage came apart, my light wouldnt come on, so it must be on the transfer case.
