97 and 98 4x4 transmissions will work, after that the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) went electronic over mechanical so you will need to modify any trans after 99 and I am not sure what is involved in doing that.

Wrong. A 4r70w will work from 98-03. 97 won't work because the wiring harness is different. The 97 still gathers the speed signal the same way as 99-03. The only change was the cluster itself.

The information I had was gleaned from another site and I assumed it was correct but Carcrazy seems pretty confident and spends a lot more time on here than I do so I stand corrected.

We just had a thread on this very subject in the past 30 days. 97-98 only due to the VSS, where as the 97 has to be repinned to fit the 98. 99 and newer only fit 99 and newer, due to the speedometer design changes. WhiteGT89 supplied the wiring schematic changes needed for the 1997 to 1998 usage.

I thought 97-98 had the tail shaft speed sensor?

So Carcrazy does that mean that the transmission from a 2000 F150 5.4L reg cab long bed fit and work on my 99 F150 4.6L ext cab short bed. Both are 2wd

Your basic question answer is Yes. The torque converter must be to the engine size. The transmissions are interchangeable but require the correct converter for the correct stall speed.

hope you’re still on here I tried putting a 99 4r70 2wd into my 98 f150. I just had to add a tail shaft speed sensor since 99 didn’t have one. Everything seems to work speedo and odo both work. Shifts all gears. But OD light is flashing. Could it be it’s a bad tranny or is the electronics not compatible.
