I ran a flat top with valve reliefs in mine with cncd Chambers at 46cc I believe. It was 11.1 static ish. I could only run 17 degrees of timing. It begged for a e85 swap. I would keep it under or at 10:1. I would do the 17cc dish and never regret it a bit with today's gas. Hopefully you will have it tuned.
Factory was 9.0:1 ratio in 97, then it went up a bit in 2000 with the PI heads (Approx 9.3:1). The 3V's are 9.8:1, and I am pretty sure that much beyond 10:1, you're going to need flex fuel (E85) which is 105 octane, IIRC. Otherwise you'll probably do some ping-a-ping-ping. I also seem to remember seeing that a PI head swap onto a 97-99 makes a 10:1 ratio anyway. Maybe you should look into that, seeing as how you have a 97.
