That I why I asked for the year of your truck. 97-98 years are non PATS. Pats started with the 99 models. At the very least you will need to have the dealer reflash the PCM to accommodate the PATS. You will also have to insure that the harness to the bulkheat and instrument cluster are compatible for those two model years. If you can source the pinouts for the 2002 4.2 and the 2001 5.4 you can check out the compatibility

What are the pinouts exactly? I definitely want to know what I'm getting into before I start spending money

I would personally want to have a donor truck with a 5.4 in it before I started the swap. I would look for a wrecked one and buy it but that's just what I would do. It u will have lots of time invested in it in my opinion.

Well I'm gonna give the place a call today and see if that expedition is 4x4 so I can use that transmission. If it is, I think I'm gonna go that route so I don't have to mess with all the pats stuff

Even if the 5 speed managed to bolt up, the 5.4 would tear it to shreds.

The 4.2 has the typical SBF bolt pattern. You would have to get a manual from a 4.6 truck to even get one to bolt to a 5.4. Then on top of that a 5.4 would grenade it very quickly.

We'll never know until Someone will try...

Another problem is the Engine Mount.. V6 engine is sitting to far at the rear. There is just some extender or adapter bolted on the cylinder head where the Alternator, A/C Compressor, Power Steering are bolted.

Get this Book...

I think the front Suspension is not strong enough to hold the 5.4 engine. 4x2 4.2 is only using a wheel bearing on the front rotor and the Spindle Nut is
only tighten to 17 Lb/inch.

Make Sure you also don't exceed the Front Max GAWR

4.2 V6 4x2 Front GAWR
2950 Pounds / 1338 Kilograms

The 5.4 will not bolt up to to the 4.2 transmission. Solution: replace it with one that will. Any 1997-2003 4.6 manual transmission.

The 4.2 PCM will not run the 5.4. Solution any 2003 model year 5.4 PCM and engine harness.

The 4.2 exhaust will not bolt up. Solution: replace it.

You will need 5.4 accessories. Power steering pump and lines and alternator.

There will be a few fitment issues like mounts and misc hoses and wires.
