Default 2003 Ford F150 starting/gear problem

Hey guys, my dad has a 2003 Ford F150 4wd 5.4 liter V8 and it has a couple of issues that I was hoping I would be able to fix for him as a gift for father's day.
The first thing that I was hoping someone on here could help me is an issue when he starts his truck. He can start it with the truck in park but if he does so, it won't shift out of park. However, if he puts it in neutral and then starts it, he can shift into gear normally but, if he puts it back into park, he isn't able to shift without turning the car off and going through neutral again.
I appreciate any help and if you need any extra information I'll be glad to provide it.

Do the brake lights work? Sounds like the shift interlock is faulty. As I recall, it uses a signal from the brake switch to release the lock.

The more I am thinking about this.... I think it might actually be two switches in one. If the brake lights DO work, I'd still get up there and look at that switch and the wiring.

The brake lights do work. I'll be sure to check the switch out when I have the chance, thank you!

My 1997 F150 was doing the same thing. It was a broken wire at the brake light switch above the brake pedal.

Same here, - brake switch on a 98. The switch connector actually worked loose, lost connection while my daughter was filling up at a gas station. The truck would start but not move from park. Couldn't neutral it out either. Yea switch connector was barley hanging on, not seated. Gave it a little push...fixed!
