2003 f150 4x4, 4.6, automatic transmission
Greetings and thank you in advance for any assistance.
Can I drive with front CV half shafts removed without damaging the front wheel bearings?
My cousin bought this truck several years ago but did not checks the front differential for oil. It has been empty. All these years driving around the country, coast to coast. Surprise! Noise from the front end. So we want to remove the front cv half shafts so he can drive it until he saves up to get that differential rebuilt.
I don’t see a problem with doing so but want to double check as my experience is with foreign vehicles.

Don’t try driving 4x4 with front half shafts removed.
After looking more carefully I see that we would need to have the axle ends and install them to hold the bearings and hub together. Otherwise it looks like there would be catastrophic damage to the vehicle when the wheel falls off.
