2002 Ignition problem
My 2002 F150 Supercrew wouldn't turn over this morning. It made no noise under the hood, only a click under the dash when the key was turned. The battery tested fine. I crossed the 2 large posts on the solenoid with the key on and the truck started. I thought that I had solved my problem. Nope. Before I made the long trip to the parts store I decided to voltage test the wire coming from the ignition switch with the key in the crank position expecting to see 12+ volts. Before I could have my daughter turn the key I noticed the the wire was already reading 5 volts. With the key turned to crank I still got 5 volts.
A little background. A couple of years ago I had a windshield leak that caused water to get the GEM module wet. When the module would get wet the electrical system would do crazy stuff. When it dried it was back to normal. I ended up having to have the windshield replaced to fix the thing but it has been fine since. I never had to replace the GEM. I recently (2 weeks) had to change the alternator. On this past Monday I had to replace the brake booster which involved taking one cluster of wires loose from the brake pedal. Everything seemed to go OK and the truck was back on the road. After the booster change I noticed my cruise control wasn't working. Does anyone know what may be causing power to be at the ignition wire without the key turned to crank position? How about the cruise control? I thought I might have damaged something when I was under the dash removing or installing the booster but don't see anything wrong. I ran out of daylight and will make a closer inspection tomorrow but was am looking for ideas. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I posted today with basically the same question. Are you burning up starter solenoids by chance? I am..and i'm wondering if it's because i have 4 volts on my fender solenoid small wire which is keeping my starter sol stuck on and is burning up.Have your daughter turn the key to run position and test the same wire....to check the function of the nuetral safety switch. That little wire come from the safety switch on the tranny. It should be reading zero in rev+other gears. I still get the 4 volts in park and nuetral. We may have a short.
