2000 F150 Help!?
Hey Guys, Im new to this forum. I just recently bought a 2000 F150 with 167k miles on it. It has the 5.4L Triton extended cab off-road edition. When i pulled it into the shop n I checked all the differentials and the rear diff had some metal shavings in it. And also ive been smelling burning diff oil. So do i need a whole new rear end or just new gears in there? Or will that make it not smell? They said something else on the rear axle leaks by the tires a little bit im not sure what it was they said but its not a huge problem right now but is that maybe what im smelling being burned is whatever i leaking on the wheels? Thanks Guys!
i had a little bit of metal shaveings in mine when i changed my gear oil, just put full synthetic oil in there , the thickest you can buy, cause i off road mine alot and sntch my friends out of mudholes, snatching **** could mess it up, just keep it lubed, put full synthetic, in there, and CHANGE IT two weeks from there, most likely it just grinded a little from being drove hard, but i did that to mine and it was fine
sounds like the rear seals are leaking or at least one of them anyhow. Yes switch out the diff fluid ASAP and change the seals. The burning smell could be from the fluid leaking out and running inside the rim and being slung onto the tailpipe. Take a look at the rear wheels on the inside and see if they are shiney and oil soaked.
