1999 4.6L 5 Speed trouble shifting
So I've had an issue with my truck for a while now, and I'm having trouble pinpointing it.
Basically from a stop its very hard to get into first gear, you have to rock the shifter back and forth a couple times and press harder than you should to get it to go in.
Also, shifting from 1st to second, it has to basically be rev-matched to slot into gear, which can be a royal pain trying to shift while going up hill since it takes a minute for the engine to slow down enough to shift.
Any ideas? The clutch was just replaced about 8,000 miles ago.

synchronizer maybe?

Changing the fluid should help smooth it out a little but it does sound like a syncro if it only happens on the 1-2 shift. Just rev it high in first and then shift it straight to third lol.
All M5OD's can be hard to shift into first from a stop sometimes. Don't know why they are like that but almost every one I have driven is like that. When my 99 doesn't want to go into first, I go down into second and then it usually goes right into first easily.

Alright, thanks. A friend suggested using Pennzoil synchromesh fluid as it supposedly helps old and worn synchros. Everything I've seen on it says its identical to the GM fluid. Is it safe to run in it in my transmission? Would it be advisable?

The slave cylinder is going bad. You should check to see if brake fluid is leaking from the slave cylinder at the housing between the engine and transmission. Also see if your reservoir is low on fluid from the leak. If it is, add fluid, pump the clutch around 5 times and see how it works. Also look to see if it is leaking. If it is leaking, you have to change the slave which is going to be expensive due to all the work involved. If you have a warranty on the clutch, I would take it back to the guy.

No leaks or anything of the like, the fluid is right at the line. The clutch was one of the last things done by the previous owner, I talked to the shop that did it (same one I use for most things) and they can warrety the parts but the company won't do a labor reimbursement since I wasnt the owner when the work was done. I'm fairly sure the slave was done when they did the clutch too, and our family has worked with them for the past 22 years, they've always done very good work, so I doubt the clutch has failed already.
