1997 F150 doesn't start sometimes.
Hello all, I am new to the site and really need some help. Recent when I want to start my truck it doesn't start. All powers up, but no clicking, or anything. I know it isn't the battery. Here is the kicker, the only way I can get it to start is if I jam the automatic shifter up and then most times it will work, also if I was to want to start in first gear, it will not go into it, just wont let me go into it. Once I do get it started and put into drive all is fine. My question, is there some type of alignment for automatics in the shifter, or is there a sensor problem? Any help would be great. How much would something like this cost?
Yes....it's rather simple. Your shifter mechanism is just loose. Look up under the dash and there will be 2 Torx bit screws that attach to the shifter. Tighten these 2 screws up and your problem is solved. I recently had to do this to my truck as well.
Note; the sign that the gear shifter won't go into 1st gear is the give away the linkage is lose.

Good day!
If westtnfx4's option doesn't get it, you may want to look into replacing the neutral safety switch on your trans... It sounds like it has a dead spot when in Park... Go to Neutral the next time it has an issue and see if it will start... The truck should NOT start in anything except Park or Neutral!
Good luck!!
