1997 4.6 4x4 automatic
My truck runs good until i get going 35 - 40 mph and around 3000 rpm in OD and it will hit what feels like a rev limiter with kind of violent jerking. If I turn off the OD then it will downshift into what feels like second and I am able to redline it if I wanted to. There are no codes for the transmission and only engine code is a egr code. I tested the TPS which looks good with no drop outs. I also tried a known good MAF and ECM with same results. Where should I look next. I feel its an engine problem more than a transmission problem. Help please.
I dont believe it is a misfire because it feels like its getting fuel cut on and off at exactly 3000 rpm in OD. I did check the plugs and they do look fine. I will go pick up a set tomorrow to get it out of the way. I watch the scan data as it jerks and it looks fine. No misfire on the scanner and no faults that I can see on the transmission. I just dont know what to do.
Look here.... sometimes you answer your own question.
Okay so I fixed the truck just to give more info on this one so you understand where I started from. So I got a killer deal on this 97 from my boss for a $1000. The shop told him it needed a transmission because of the way it shifted and wouldn't accelerate past 35. So not knowing a whole lot of history of what he did I took the deal because I didn't believe it was a transmission being the problem was so consistent. Anyways he told me the 4x4 was inop but that was my last worry. So I drove it yesterday and as I was going down a hill I put the truck in neutral to coast and it cut the engine at 40 mph as it was cutting out while it was in gear but I was in neutral. So I couldn't start it till I slowed the truck down to 35. So long story short I started thinking that maybe the transmission speed and road speed didn't match so I looked into the transfer case. And I found that it was in 4 low behind the electric motor. So I took a pliers and turned to 2wd and it worked. I guess because the axles wasn't engaging I just didn't think it was in 4 wheel and also I didn't know the repair history. But thank you for reading and answering. I appreciate it very much 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
