Default Brake controller problems

So I connect my trailer all lights work everything seems good. When I press the brake controller or try to adjust the gain it tells me " no trailer connected" brakes on trailer do not work.
any idea where to start trouble shooting this problem

Thanks Steve

put incandescent light via gator lips between the electric break and the ground, and get someone to hit the breaks if it lights up and gets brighter the harder the pedal is pushed the the problem is in the trailer,
thats were I would start.

Did you buy it used? Also, tell us about the truck; what year etc.

Are you using the 7 pin connector?

Did the brake controller come with the truck?

Did you add the trailer via the truck's menu?
