OK, thanks everyone.

but I think my problem is electrical. beside the dash control switch and the solinoid located behing the battery tray, and the wiring to the transfer case are there any other electrical connections to check?

oh yea ive know of a few switches in the cab that went out, i would check all the connections and clean them on the switch

mine is an '05 FX4, and each of the past 3 late fall/early winters, i have has to replace one or the other of the accuators. this year both of them were shot. its almost routine maintence for me now to check pre-season so im not left stuck somewhere.
