The oil sending unit is binary, when the pressure is above it's threshold it switches on and the gauge moves approximately to mid scale. The temperature gauge is a sort of modified idiot light, the response is linear until the PCM thinks the engine is overheating at which point the temp gauge will go to full scale.

He is right and trying to answer your question. Listen.

Agreed. My truck likes to burn oil and I've ran it at least 2 quarts low (of the low mark on the dipstick) without knowing it. Oil pressure gauge stayed the exact same as always (right at 5/8). It definitely should be a light because it doesn't tell anything other then pressure or no pressure.

With that said, I've ran my truck almost dry on oil haha. Two quarts down from the "low" mark on the dipstick. And she still keeps rolling strong. I tend to like these 5.4L unlike the masses who hate their problems.

Knocking on wood right now,

Corey

I get a high 75 when I give it gas or on cold start when it revvs itself up. Around 23-25 psi hot idle. Ive read anything lower than 20 is bad signs I use oil filter adapter to get my readings. I got 202k all original on 5w30 with phaser sound

Watching the oil pressure gauge to determine how much oil you have in the engine is just crazy. You could have oil pressure with only 2 quarts but that doesn't mean it's good for the engine.

That is why there is a dipstick.
