I have a 2006 4.6L and want to mod the air intake to have a larger opening hole. called Gotts mod. Some have told me my truck will run lean though, getting too much air. Would it really make that big of a difference? and how long could i safely run it without a chip? and if i need to get a chip, which chip should i get for my 4.6?

I don't "think" the Gotts mod would cause your truck to run lean. A few posters/members claimed to have picked up a few MPG's with that mod. As far as a "chip" please do yourself a favor and get a SCT X2 or X3 hand held tuner. IMHO this should be your first mod. I stand Corrected I just read that on the 04 & ups it WILL make the trucks run lean. There is a good post on this "Gotts Mod" running now that you should read. So Get a tuner FIRST.

I run a Goots mod on both of my 2007s. I do not have a lean problem. Matter of fact i lost 0.1 mpg doing this. But it gave me alot more power at lower rpms

How do you know you arent running lean though? When did you do the mod?
