....the little black box ahead of my rearview mirror. I can't find any references to it in the owner's manual.

Believe that it is your auto lamp sensor.

Your Compass -

The auto lamp sensor is integrated on the dash (driver's side) where your blinky red light is.

Thanks for asking this I was wondering the same thing figured it had something to do with compass
I can't believe they couldn't hide it better than that.

I am pretty sure that it is for the compass and possibly the electronics for the auto-dim.
