He's telling us there is 130000 miles on this motor. To me that's pretty good....I think your gonna see the first few years of the 5.0 have a few bug that need working out.

Dang that sucks. My cam phasors are so freakin loud, people ask me all the time if I have a diesel swap. I really hope this doesn't happen to me, but Im at 120k and counting. Its coming.

So for those people (myself included) that have loud phasers and are worried about this happening I would say it may be worthwhile to go get the phasers replaced and/or get an aftermarket cam installed with cam limiters. It's not cheap but cheaper than a new engine....

Just a thought

What would be the cost to get aftermarket cams and litters?

There are no specific cams for the 5.4L but the hottrod cams for the 4.6 work on the 5.4 engine. they run 900-1200 bucks, then install ontop of that...not cheap.

Yeah not cheap, well I have 96k miles so I figure my motor SHOULD last me a while. My cams are loud but not to the point where it sounds like a diesel. I think a Jasper motor sound good to me if they cured all the annoying issues.

I have also heard that you can use the hot rod cam limiters on a stock cam to get rid of the ticking. You just have to have it retuned to not allow the timing to exceed what the limiter is set for. Thats kinda what I've considered...

Well that isn't good at all! Sorry to hear what happened. I'm a little over 120,000 and my phasers make some noise as well. I have a friend that is a tech at a Ford garage and at 110,000 miles I had him listen to it after a 2 hour drive and he said it was one of the quietest he's heard for a while and that he's had to replace them on trucks with 50,000 miles . That made me feel a little better but I still think when I reach 150,000 I'm going to have the Cam Phasers, chain, guides, and tensioners replaced to prevent something like this happening further down the road.

Hope you get it all worked out. As long as the rest of the trucks in good shape I wouldn't have a problem spending $4-$5000 on it. That's only a years worth of payments on a new one.

I've heard stories that once the phasers are bad and you replace them the problem just returns and the you're out about $1800.

That's what the dealer AND Jasper told me about them. If you have bad phasers to begin with, the internal "domino" effect has already begun and regardless of what you replace it is inevitable. He said (dealer) that replacing the phasers MIGHT get you an extra 4-5k miles once they have gotten "that bad" if they haven't already failed, so in the dealers OWN WORDS he said the phasers being replaced won't do anything but delay it. The only real solution is a swap to a new, fixed motor.

I didn't make that up, the dealer's service manager said that himself. IDK about you guys, but to me it doesn't sound like he is trying to make a buck on this deal, but just trying to help. Maybe he is full of smoke, maybe not, but at this point I really don't see any reason for him to lie... He knows I won't buy it from him.
