Default weird starting issue/question

So I was leaving work and went to start my truck (08 FX4) and the starter was turning over but the truck wouldnt fire, but the starter kept cranking for a few seconds after I let go of the key. I tried this a couple times and it kept doing it. So i turned the key on, without trying to start it, held the brake, cycled the transmission through all the gears, put it back in park and tried starting it again. It fired right up. First time this has happened. Anyone ever have this happen to them or heard of it? Any recommendations like a starter issue or even worse transmission doing something funky? Thanks guys.

Transmission shouldn't have anything to do with it. I'm guessing you have a fuel delivery issue. How's the truck running? Is it nice and smooth at idle? If not, I would clean the MAF sensor and throttle body. Replace the fuel filter.

Don't worry about the truck keeping the starter going. Some years of these trucks (not sure which ones), are programmed to keep cranking until you flick the key all the way to off. My 06 doesn't have it, but I wish it did because sometimes I just let go by habit and it doesn't start.

I have a fuel filter in the garage just been too damn cold to do anything lately, finally just starting to warm up. I did clean the TB and MAF last year, but i suppose it wouldn't hurt to give it another shot. Thanks for the input.

If it does it again put the truck in neutral and try to start it. Could have been a little off on the gear selector...
