Default Visual Cam Phaser check?

Hey guys....I know the full blown answer is "replace them while I'm in here"....but $$$ is kinda tight and cam phasers are a fortune here. Like over $1300 from Ford.

But here's the thing....visually they look great. So is there any way of visual signs they're shot???

My motor was clean as a whip inside with no sign of sludges. Cams looked great with no signs of wear. It ran like new and the only reason I ripped into it is I had chain slap so wanted to get some new guides/tensioners in before she jumped a tooth.

Long and short....only thing I was noticing was a light deiseling sound at warm idle....no codes....ran great. As soon as it cooled down here this winter it would take a longer before it actually started to make the noise so maybe the increased oil pressure from cold oil helped. Also adding to that....I found both tensioner seals were pooched fairly badly so my question is because it only seemed to appear with warm oil is it possible that my phasers are actually fine and my issues were a bit of reduced oil pressure from the blown tensioners? Vct solenoids look brand new but those will be changed if I do out it together without replacing the phasers and the noise continues.

Otherwise....with 250Km on it....I'm probably just as well off to put her back together and live with a little dieseling sound till she kicks the can I'd say then drop a reman in for $2800.

Sounds like a plan. I only know to look for the 5 little arms that lock/unlock. I would do the VCT's while you are in there, or even do the lock-outs from Livernois, but it will need a tune if you do the lock-outs.
