Default Very hard steering

Recently my 04 stx has gotten very hard to steer. I did a search and it was suggested by some that it could be the lower (intermediate) steer shaft. I stopped by my mechanics and he thought it may the the ball joints. Has anyone else dealt with this. When turning the steering wheel to corner it seems to hit intervals of hard and soft turning and does not return to center. Any ideas what the cause could be? I've checked my power steering fluid, it's fine, no leaks or groaning.

Thanks for the help.

I solved the problem by putting some oil on the two knuckle "U" joints in the steering shaft. I found this information in an earlier post. I will also leave a comment there.

Jack it up and put it on stands and test it out with a friend...check for bad tie rods.
