Default 2007 5.4 f150

First thanks to a bunch of guys that has helped me from junking my 07 F150 with 150K. My truck is louder than a Diesel about 30-40% of the time I'm at lower rpms to idle. It also misses under low torque say with the speed control on and it starts up an overpass!! First, are these the symptoms of bad vcts?? If yes, can I change out the vct solenoids with only removing the valve covers or will I have to go in through the front of the engine? Thanks again. Hugh

If your just changing the solenoids you dont have to remove the valve covers. Theres a how to on here. It looks acually easy

Got a T27 from Ace today; longest they had was about 4". Hope that works. Solenoids are much cheaper at the dealer now, just ordered two @ less than $52 each and less than $13 each for the seals. I can post the seal part number tomorrow if someone needs it. Your dealer will find it in the valve cover schematic while the solenoid is in the cam/timing schematic.

I replaced mine today with the help of this thread! Thanks to all who have contributed! That danged seal was a booger to get off, needle nose pliers and a short screw driver got it out ...never fails no matter what kind of gloves I have on I always bark my knuckles on something. I have already had my phasers replaced at the dealer and I thought I started to hear some ticking again, although it looks like the chain tensioners are the culprit so they are next.

[QUOTE=Fx4-Michael;2099500]Alright looked on fordparts.com after a little research... $42.33 each and $10 per seal. Plus $8 shipped to the house. $8 is worth not dealing with the dealer lol looks like ill give this a try in a week or so, just ordered a new fpdm and need to pay my license plate tab. Thanks for the thread!/QUOTE]

I'm located in southern California, I went to the fordparts.com site put in VCT solenoid and the part number and was told no such part. I realize I must be doing something wrong... please help I want to change VCT solenoids.

On fordparts.com -just put in VCT in the keyword block. Listed locally here for $38.80. Did you put your VIN in?

Default Engine noise problem getting worse

I bought a 2007 5.4 w/155K 20 months ago. I immediately had the oil and filter changed using 10-30 regular oil. Ran great except for dieseling at low rpm (<1000) about 5% of the time. Got about 16 mpg. At about 157K I had (as recommended by respected facility) a BG deep (lower) intake flush. Waste of $$. Mileage dropped to 15 mpg and no change to running problem!! It throw a cam sensor failure, replaced both (twice), error code still there. Also installed a new K&W air filter.
Consulted the F150 Forum and immediately changed the oil and filter to Mobile 1 5-20 synthetic. No significant immediate change but as time went by the following:
1. Deiseling got much worse, 70 to 80% of the time when running <1000 rpm!!!
2. Continued to have a muffled backfire at cold startup and low speeds.
3. Started to miss (surge) at freeway speeds and low torque, like when I started over a freeway overpass. No problem when in passing gear.
4. Started to miss (surge) when shifting at 40 to 50 mph when warm and driving under normal to low acceleration.
5. Finally, started to have a pronounced miss at all speed ranges. Kicking it into passing gear will stop it but would come back!!
Gave up and did the following:
1. Changed plugs and wires (boots) with Motorcraft parts. Took my time and did not break any. Also used compressed air and shop vac to insure no junk fell into the cylinder.
2. New Motorcraft VCT solenoids, both sides.
Started right up. From the get go, the engine had a new noise; something that I’d say is between a collapsed lifter and a broken rocker arm. Checked, using a long screw driver and the noise comes from both sides, slightly louder on the right. If asked, I’d say it is coming from the front near the new VCT!!!.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Hugh
