Um, what is this?
I don't even know the right word to do a search. I was under the truck today painting my rusting rear diff cover (after I wire brushed it clean of course), when I noticed this:

Its only on the drivers side, nothing connected to it that I could see. Just a steel cylinder that wobbles on two rubber bushings. Is this some sort of vibration dampener or something, and why only on the drivers side?

It is a vibration damper. Some trucks came with them a lot didn't. Ford supposedly put them on for a reason, with out them in cab vibrations and other problems can occur. And the rear one is also used to prevent fuel pump failure, the road vibrations that damper dampens will travel to the fuel pump and cause premature pump failure. It also cuts down on bed vibration at certain speeds, which I wish mine had one for that reason alone.
