Default Typical oil pressure issues

I'm sure this has been discussed at nauseum...

Symptoms: Knocking at hot idle, rough idle only after coming down off highway speed (fixed by increasing RPM's quickly)

Repairs made: New camshafts, new cam phasers, new guides/chains/solenoids, new VCT's, new lash adjusters, new rollers. Put some seafoam in oil to clean out any possible deposits to increase oil flow.

Thinking about two options. #1 option is to replace 5w20 with thicker oil like a 10w30 or 15w40. #2 option is to pull that damn front cover off AGAIN and put a new high pressure oil pump on.

Thoughts?

Well I always go with the cheapest route first, in your case a heavier oil. If that doesn't make you happy, well there's the second option.

avoid heavy oil... do the correct thing.... check the oil pressure.... then diagnose it correctly.. and possibly put a pump on it..

yes you can go the cheap route and use thicker oil alll your doing is masking the noise you're not "fixing" anything

You stated all the individual timing components but didn't list tensioners... Are we safe to assume they got replaced too?

Assuming the tensioners are not the issue, you have a clogged oil pump screen and thicker oil will not help. It may make the problem worse.

I'm with PerryB then... If you didn't clean the screen, you probably have chunks of your old guides clogging it.

UPDATE: I added 6 quarts of 10w40 and one quart of Lucas. It quieted everything down and removed the hard idling and idiot light generating the P0012 over retarded code. I also changed out one of the VCT's on the passenger side.

Yes, I realize that I took the "cheap" route and I didn't fully resolve the issue but I will tear into the engine again later when I have more time and put in a high pressure pump.

Hey, you have a quiet smooth engine again. No shame in that!

if it works, it works. Even if it's only for the time being.
