Default Trying to make for a cleaner oil change

The oil filter is always a mess with the 5.4 placement over the frame rail. Has anyone tried poking a hole in the filter to let it drain? I ask because on my RX7, the filter is completely upside down and I poke a hole in the top and it almost completely drains.

If no one's done it, I'll try it at my next change. Fortunately, I only change the oil once a year, so it's not too bad.
Thanks

Other options:

1) put plastic bag over filter before removing.

2) On a car many years ago, the filter was located directly above part of the exhaust system that had a mesh finishing on it. Would ooze oil for months. I finally wrapped it in newspaper right before each oil change. Probably could have used tin foil also.

I have been meaning to order one of these for my wife's car that drops oil all over the starter when you remove the filter. Looks promising. It is rubber with metal inside so you can shape it however you need.
Amazon Amazon

i think I saw a post on this forum where someone showed he took the factory drip thing off there and was able to fit a funnel with an offset spout under the filter I think he may have ziptied it in place. I thought it looked like a slick solution but I'm gonna try the one I linked above because I need it for the other car too.

I've been putting a piece of foil over that whole section, then just sliding it out after the change. The filter just holds so much oil, it's messy no matter what you do.

Here's the one I was thinking of. Looks fairly cheap and easy.
