The transfer case in the 2016 that I drive calls for Mercon LV as stated above. I wasn't sure if mine was originally XL12 or other. I went to Ford, the parts counter was aware right away that XL12 was no longer. They assumed it was LV but checked the system and sure enough, LV. In addition, when I got down under the truck there is a sticker slapped on it stating "MERCON LV ONLY".
I'd suggest calling your local parts counter (I know, asking Ford is taboo because they are all dumb people) just for confirmation.
I have no idea what was used in 2005 and/or if the spec has changed to allow the NEW LV in a 15 year old design.
