Default Transmission Switch?

Can anyone explain this quote:

My truck has a **** for 2H, 4H, and 4L. When I turn it to 4H (when driving) a dash light turns on to say "4H" and sure enough it engages just fine. If I then turn the **** to 4L, the "4H" light stays on and I can't tell if 4L actually engaged or not.

I think it's a "switch" problem based on wat I've read so far. Too bad I have no idea what that even means.

ANyone able to help? Thanks to all who care

yep have to be in neutral, stopped and your foot on the brake to shift in/out of 4 low...only use 4 low in deep mud, sand, pulling someone out of a ditch, stuff like that

Thanks fellas. I'll try it then. Truely sorry for the greenhorn questions (I just started having fun with this truck recently) but I have a few more:

Should 4L engage immediately (within 60 seconds of turning the switch) when in nuetral?

-and-

Can I turn back to 4H and/or 2H while moving in 4L?
