Default Transmission Replacement

Transmission went on my 04 f150, 2 weeks ago and it is being replaced by dealer. Warranty is covering a majority of the work/material but one this they won't cover is a new transmission oil cooler. According to the dealer the used transmission requires this be replaced when installing the rebuilt transmission. The dealer says that the seller of the rebuilt tranny (dons automotive mall)requires this in order for them to honor the 12mo warranty.

Is the delaer trying to sell me something i don't need here? With a proper flush the tranny cooler should still be ok. Correct???

they should be able to just flush it out with cleaners and that should work. what dealer do you have it at there in NY? i would assume it the cooler gets cloged up with debris from the tranmission it should be covered under warranty.

If pieces of metal/tranny went through the lines into the cooler, flushing more than likely wont get everything out. I would imagine the insides would be permanently contaminated. What should be done is install a brand new cooler and lines, but also install an in-line filter that way you cant ruin the cooler if something happens in the future. I wouldnt want to risk a "brand new" tranny with a used cooler and lines. Thats my opinion. If you are spending that much for the tranny, you might as well do everything right. Atleast, the new cooler and lines. Filter is just added protection.

Yes^^

The coolers got to go. It will never be clean again regardless of rinsing/flushing and will slowly but surely circulate its contents into the new tranny. Nobody's trying to screw you for more work on this one...Have them change it...

Especial86 and 06f150cfct said it right. You cannot flush the cooler and while we are on the subject the torque converter can't be flushed either. The trans lines can be flushed and an inline filter should also be installed. It's a questionable practice flushing the portion of the radiator that cools the trans fluid but it can be done.

You can't blame the reman shop for wanting this done, no arguement if it does fail. Cheap insurance if you ask me. If the converter is replaced and a new cooler is installed, it's all on them.
