Default Transmission problems after replacing engine?

Hey all,

I recently joined the forum to see if there are any knowledgeable people out there that can help me. My dad recently had his engine replaced with a remanufactured one in his 2008 F-150 2WD 4.6. Within about a week of getting the truck back the transmission failed. He had it taken back to the same mechanic who said it was the overdrive band. While it was suspicious that it failed so soon after the engine replacement it also seemed like maybe it was just bad luck.

He decided he didn't want to dump any more money into it, but I felt like it was a huge waste to try and sell it and not even come close to getting back the money that went into the engine replacement. I offered to take it and look at it. I did a transmission rebuild on my S-10 a few years ago and its still running great so I thought this was something I could handle with enough time and patience. When I tore down the 4R75W from the F-150 it looked like much more than the overdrive band had failed. The sun shell had warped and wedged itself into the case where it couldnt even be removed.....so I decided to buy a rebuilt one, rather than try and rebuild it myself. I also replaced the torque converter and flushed the lines, also checking for any kinks that could have caused them to be plugged. I thought that maybe in the engine replacement they had gotten bent and blocked but that didnt seem to be the case.

After putting in the new transmission it ran great for about 90 miles but when I was on the highway the o/d light started flashing and it revved like it was in neutral. This is exactly the same way that the last one had failed. I immediately pulled off the highway and gears 1-3 seemed to still be working, but sluggishly. I just parked it ASAP and haven't tried driving it since.

I havent been able to find my code reader so I ordered a new one. In the meantime, I wanted to ask if anyone had any guesses what is going on here. Im holding out hope that the transmission isnt totally shot. I am also wondering if the mechanic who put in the new engine screwed something up and its just going to blow any transmission that gets thrown in there. Or maybe I just happened to buy a bad transmission?

Im about ready to throw in the towel and claim the warranty on the transmission I bought and let my dad sell the truck but am making one last effort to brainstorm other solutions. Im all ears for any suggestions. There are other details to the story but wanted to only include the major ones as this is already a long post. Let me know if there's any other info you think could be helpful. Ill put an update once I read the codes.

huge bummer. I don’t know enough about trans to offer much help. But, I am curious about:

- how did mechanic diag the first trans?
- did he quote a repair?

- have you dropped the pan yet (or planning to) on the second trans?

- unrelated to trans, which engine reman company did he go through and how happy/not happy was he with that co. And their engine ?

I'm pretty sure that the mechanic just diagnosed the first transmission it from a combination of the codes and the symptoms the truck was showing without opening up the transmission. When I tore it down there was a ton of metal in the pan and addition to the overdrive band and the sunshell damage i described in the last post, the clutch packs were all in pretty bad shape. Im not sure exactly the quote he gave my dad but I think it was over 3k and included fully replacing the tranny with a rebuilt one.

I had to go out of town for work but when i get back after checking codes, my next step will probably be to drop the pan.

Not sure what company the reman came from. Ill get back to you on that too.

Update:

I've slowly getting back into diagnosing this. I ran codes and got P0962 Pressure Control (PC) Circuit Solenoid A - Circuit Low.

Basically, sounds like it may not be as bad as I was guessing when it first all went down. It sounds like this code could be a number of things to check before replacing the solenoid. I'm working through process of elimination.

I had overfilled the transmission slightly, so I drained it to the right level. I replaced fuses 32-34 because those are linked to trans. Did a visual inspection of all electrical connections and cooler lines for kinks. I had flushed the lines when replacing the trans so I knew that there shouldn't be any blockage there. After all this I test drove. Engine light stayed off and everything shifted great for about 5 miles before same lights came back on and went back into limp mode.

My next step is to check for continuity on all wires and clean connections with contact cleaner. Still open to any suggestions. Im not worried about replacing solenoid but Im just hoping its not the PCM...

Side note: When my dad got the truck back after engine replacement it went into limp mode about 5 miles later. He took it back to the shop and they got it back on the road and then a week or two later the original transmission problems started to go down. I'm thinking something got ****ed with the wiring or PCM in the process of installing the engine and everything that has happened since has been connected to this. Just a theory, open to other thoughts.
