Is the fluid dark red or brown? Dark red is good, brown is bad.

The fluid level is up to where it should be but it is really dark...it runs terribly. I get it up to about 40-45 and it doesn't want to go. I back it out of the driveway and put it in park and it won't go, I have to shift back and forth a time or two. What the heck?

I ran into this problem today, I was checking my trans fluid and seemed a little low so I topped it up.... checked the transfer case fluid and when I pulled the fill plug out it gushed out at me... glad to have found this thread and know that it's a known problem.....

I have an 04 f-150 reg cab 4wd

I can do my own work, but now I just have to find the time...lol!

Mine was barely touching the bottom of the dipstick. I don't think you have this problem.

Tranny fluid will register at the cold level if the vehicle is not fully warmed up when measured. Check it after a drive of at least ten minutes. If it still reads low, then you may have an issue.

I had the same problem on my 05. I took it to a independent shop and cost me $450 including having the transmission flushed.

You have to drop the transfer case to get to the seal. It's not easy without a lift but it can be done. Definitely not an amateur DIY job. If you have dropped a tranny or pulled a motor before then you should be able to handle it, if not then take it to a mechanic.

That's the only way you can tell, if you don't see any oil leaks on the outside. You could be saving yourself a big headache.

Is there any harm in the extra fluid going into the transfer case? Or, if I keep up with it to keep enough fluid in the transmission and take excess out of the transfer case, is all well?
