Default transmission fluid

I have a 2004 5.4 4x4 truck. It takes merc V to my knowledge. I can't seem to find merc 5 anywhere. Is merc V my only option for my trans and if so, where can I look to get some besides the main sources like autozone, etc.

Most any autoparts store should carry some sort of mercon v. I will being doing a trans fluid change shortly so have been looking at prices anytime I'm in a auto parts store just to compare. Everyone I have been to has some sort of mercon V. Walmart had both the Castrol brand and their house brand supertech. Advance Auto has Castrol on sale right now $5.19qt. Autozone had the Castrol and another brand I dont remember which, even my tiny napa had their branded mercon V. Also amazon has several options with free shipping the cheapest being Havoline at $54 for 12qts. Also just noticed tonight if you happen to have a Pep boys nearby that you can use their coupon codes online on mercon V and make the Castrol about $4.50/ qt. I am also looking at the 5 gallon pail of Tectus Mercon V on amazon which would allow me to do multiple drain and refills to get it all changed out but I cant really find out much info on it. Mercon V should not be that hard to find, good luck.

To get the pep boys discount you have to do an online order 25% off $75 order or 35% off over a $100. If you only doing a single pan drop you wont need that much worth but if your doing it twice or doing a flush you will. Not sure about the quality of the Pep Boys duralast trans filter so cant recommend whether to add that into the mix or not.

I ordered 16 qts of Castrol MercV from O'Reilly's when they had a fire sale. I did the pan drop, installed a drain plug. Every oil change, I'll drain the pan and add new fluid until my 16 qt stockpile is gone. Poor (or lazy) man's flush.

Not a flush though, as once you empty the pan, and add lets say 5 quarts, it mixes with about 7 to 8 "dirty" quarts. Then, on the next pan drop, the cycle repeats, so you'll never get a complete "fresh" change of transmission fluid.

But there will always be an argument that 5 quarts of new fluid is better than doing nothing at all.

Yeah, agreed - flush was a poor choice of word. It's not a flush...more of a dilution, of sorts.

Default Using Mobil 1 ATF

I used Mobil 1 ATF when I changed my fluid/filter @ 30K. Works great and I recommend if you do any towing with your truck. Mine took 4 qts-06 F-150 with 5.4L.
