Default Transmission fault light

Yesterday I was pulling off a short dirt road and the transmission fault light came on. I stopped shut the engine down and the message went out.
I haven't ran codes yet but i have noticed a slight lag when moving from a stop to in low gear and then it kind of catches also noticed a slight clunking as it engages I, thinking output shaft and maybe a servo. What do you folks Think 2004 f150 fx4 303k On it but tranny has about 250k on it but trans fluid changed at 50 to 60k regularly. Last time a 2 years ago and pan was clean no shavings and fluid was clean. Any suggestions. I'm considering a monster tranny rebuilt or i may take it to a shop but that's a crap shoot.
