Default Transmission

Got 40K on the tranny, and am due a fluid change. Any special recommendations on what fluid to use? I don't want to start an oil war, here....just suggestions is all I'm looking for. Should I stick to the Motorcraft stuff or go wtih something else?

Thanks!

I'll agree with you on the "great oil debat" issue.

I got lucky; when it came time for my transmission flush, my local Ford dealer was having a special on a transmission flush at $89.00.

I would urge a flush over just a "pan drop and change".

I'd go for Royal Purple... that's just me though. I've got a buddy that does land speed racing and he raves about all their fluid and how it's AMAZING lol. I use their synthetic in my '04 and the engine seems to run a good bit smoother.

Use what the shop manual calls for and you shouldn't have trouble. Transmisisons are designed to be used with a certain fluid with a specific coefficient of friction. If the fluid lets it slip too much or not enough you are going to have shifting and possibly transmission problems. If you put the stuff in it that is supposed to be in there, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I'm pretty sure Mercon V is synthetic or semisynthetic anyway.

I called my local dealership, and they wanted 169. He also told me that they don't change the filter when they do this...just flush and fill with new fluid. Does this sound right?
