Default Transimission shifting hard, problem?

I have an 05 stx 4x4 4.6. The last couple of weeks when driving it has been shifting hard. It feels like its having a hard time actually shifting then when it does its like when you are driving a stick shift and you dont shift smooth or dump the clutch but when you are already moving. i dont have a tach but it does it around 35-40 mph and again around 70, the rpms just climb higher and higher and finally it will shift. This started a couple weeks ago I was offroad in some mud and got stuck a couple of times, I had it in 4low and it took some rocking and excessive gassing to get it out, Im sure its not supposed to go in that rpm range when in 4 low. Any ideas before I have it looked at? Im going out of town in a few days and do not want to blow my transmission on the highway. Thanks

id hate to be the one to break the news to you, but it sounds like your about to buy a new trans. if you have a programmer, set it back to stock. i would take it to autozone or someplace like that and have them read the computer. it could be something as simple as the shift solenoid.

That's weird, cause at 70mph, your tranny shouldn't be shifting at all. I'm usually in 4th by 40-45mph and the TC locks up shortly after. So if your're going into 4th at 70mph, or the TC is locking at 70mph, then there is something wrong with the tranny. Who knows how long it will last if that is the case. A week? Couple months? A year? It's a crap shoot sometimes.
