Default Transfer Case Blues...

Sooo...the previous owner of my newly acquired F150 FX4 raved on how meticulous he made sure all maintenance was done on or before schedule on my new 300000mile truck. Well last evening proved that to be very untrue. Everything started with the transmission being 2 qts low with no other leaks...immediately I thought about a bad input seal at the transfer case, so I decided to remove the fill plug of the transfer case...dry, not even a dribble. Next I figured I may as well drain and refill with transfer case fluid so I pulled the drain plug and got all of 1/2 qt of fluid!!! As the little bit of fluid came out I noticed a plastic piece in the fluid that looks very suspiciously like the nylon piece that supposed to be on the clutch fork....argghh!
Question is, how long is this less than perfect transfer case going to hold up? It's not making noise, has 2 fresh quarts, and I'm keeping it in 2wd. I'm debating on continuing driving as is, or replacing. Any experiences out there?
