Default Trans question

I have a 4.6l v8, with the 4r70e trans. It is chunking into 2nd gear, which tells me that the previous owner was towing with overdrive on, big no no.
Anyways, my question is this, is there another trans that direct bolts on that is heavier duty, like the 4r100 or e4od? Or do the trans upgrade kits for the 4r70w work for the E series also without major issues? My eventual goal is a sturdier trans for performance as well as reliability. Thanks for the help, I read posts almost daily on here, furthing my knowledge on a great truck.

not sure on other transmission that direct fit without a adaptor plate.

As far as upgrades you can look at troyer performance for a valve body, and monster in a box for a transmission rebuild.

So, that means the 70w kits will fit the 70e. Monster in a box offers a full rebuilt trans for the 70w, will that match up completely with no alterations to the plugs and such?
