Default Tranny woes

2004 4x4 5.4 auto. With 150 miles my transmission slips out of 3rd gear? revs like its in neutral. 1st and second seem all right. Don't know about o/d. From a start all ok till and 3rd engages, 1/10 of a mile or less...no gear. Fluid is fine and not burnt. I have done all my own repairs all my life was even ASA cert but never learned a thing about tranny except fluid change and r & r. Is it shot or? Goodyear wants $3800 to r & R a reman.

Thanks

I assume you mean 150K miles on it...probably due for a re-build. Shop around...that price seems high...look at the salvage yards..may be able to find a wrecked 04-08 that had a good tranny.

Good suggestion in investigating a used one. Look on Ebay as well, as I always see low mile engines and transmissions for sale by salvage companies there.

Same thing just happened to my 07 4X4. Shifting from 2nd to 3rd it was just like going into neutral and RPM's would shoot up. Turns out that a snap ring broke and O/D band broke. All fixed under warranty with only 53,000 miles. Had all recommended/scheduled maintenance done by dealer. Turns out this failure happened 1,500 miles after dealer flushed my transmission (per their recommendation). Coincidence? That is what dealer said....I'm not convinced. Thankful it was still under factory powertrain warranty and thankful that I had the foresight to buy an ESP that covers me until 100,000 miles. Gotta feeling this won't be the last tranny problem I have out of this truck based off of all that I've been reading. I've never towed a trailer with mine and it just decided to let go on my way to work one morning. Just about got run over in the process. Love, Love , Love my truck, but this has caused me to lose quite a bit of confidence in it.

It was 3600 for my mariner's tranny. Ford wanted 3800. That was a awd. I have read average for the 4r70/5 is 2500-2800.

X2 mine was $3300 installed through ford, with the warranty, AAMCO wanted $1800 for a rebuild with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty, I read alot of bad reviews about them, so i stayed away
