Default Tranny Issue??

I was going down the road this morning and noticed that its like my truck temporarily stalled then heard a loud growling/scraping noise. Then it stopped and drove fine. It's never done that before so just curious??

I have 97000 miles on the truck. 05 fx4.

Any thoughts?

Yep. One thought....get it checked out. I could not even wager a guess as to what the source of the noise is or is coming from.

At the very least, pop the hood and carefully look around. Pull the automatic transmission dip stick and smell the fluid. Does it smell burnt? Is it a clean, transparent, and "orangey pink" in color, or does it look dark? This can be an indication that your transmission is going south.

4 wheel drive....could it have engauged for a moment?

Check the engine oil too. Not wanting to scare you, but you already know this is not normal, and don't want it to happen again, possibly getting worse, or in a situation where it places you and others in danger.

Did you feel your tranny downshift to a lower gear after your engine almost stalled? How fast were you going when it happened and how much speed did you loose when the event happened? Any?

If your speed decreased then maybe something got hung up and caught somewhere and the change in speed was so much that the engine could not overcome the torque stress in the gear that you were in when your speed changed so drematically, almost stalling it.

Have that checked out definitely, or go under your truck yourself and look around, real good. It could be your e-brake or regular brakes doing something weird. Is your brake fluid level OK?

It could be the rear differential or the driveshaft or all the way to the tranny, and yes...it could be the engine. Go get it checked out if you can't find anything on a visual inspection. Although if this doesn't happen again and you take it to a shop all they will do is drive it around and visually check it too unless you tell them to specifically look at some component. And then they will charge you some terrible high price for the time they spent scratching their heads.

Did you want to have your tranny fluid and filter changed? Now would be a good time; at least you can kill 2 birds with one stone.
