Hey friends,
my kid crashed his car so I need to tow the damn thing tomorrow. I can borrow a friend’s car trailer, but I got a few questions about hookup.
My truck is a 2006 F150 STX, with a draw-tite hitch receiver added to it (looks aftermarket). I was only able to locate a 4-pin connector, however the trailer has brakes and requires a 7-pin connector. What do I need to add to my truck to be able to tow the trailer with the car on it?
It will weigh ~5000lbs (3000lbs car + 2000lbs trailer). I’m only towing inside the city, trailer only for ~10 miles, trailer with car ~ 3 miles, no steep grades.
Thanks!
I believe you’ll need the 4/7-pin harness, which plugs into the driver’s side frame rail (don’t forget the ground screw), one plug to the tail lights and the other for the trailer plugs.
Maybe you can hit a salvage yard and find that in one shot. I think the typical part stores sell an aftermarket version that you can splice the lighting wires and get you going sooner. I know the actual plug is available, too.
There are fuses or relays to be had, but they’re not needed for a trailer like yours. I think they cover trailer battery charger and power to trailer lights if some sort...you should have everything needed for basic lighting already.
I used these instructions for my ‘03. You should do similar:
Thanks! That gives me a frame of reference to work with. Looks like I’m gonna spend my evening rolling around under my truck looking for wires lol. I hope it’s mostly there already.
Good call on the junkyard thing. I may hit that up and see if I can find everything I need there.
