Default TOWING WOES-07 HD F150 -tire/rim question

(edited out a lot..) blah blah blah, got duped by the ford dealership and told this truck was plenty of truck to tow our 30' 6800 lb camper, i know now its not...

i don't want to get rid of it, i want to set it up to be able to tow. I've added a transmission cooler, and a programmer with a tune for towing (higher shift points, transmission pressure etc.)

which brings me to my problem.... tires... from what i understand the tires are not rated to tow a whole lot, and it is believed that this is the root cause of the severely neutered towing capacity on this truck-along with the 22'' rims.

Currently on the truck i have 305-40-r22 tires. to get the amount of plies desired to increase towing capacity i am going to have to go to a smaller rim.. is a 20" rim going to be small enough? or do i need to go to 18" to get enough rubber on the tires? any suggestions on brands of tires? i want to keep the aggressive look of my truck with a bigger tire if possible..

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks- datman

I feel like you don't have a hd model. The hd model has 7 lug rims and I think they are 17's. I know they definitely are not 22's though

gears will make the biggest difference you will be able to get. if you go with a 4.10 or 3.73 gear and smaller tires I guarantee you will be able to pull that camper I pull a 25 foot travel trailer weighs about 5000 pounds with my truck with 3.55 gears and 17 inch wheels with a bone stock 5.4 and it tows great.

what im worried about is the ply on the tires. nowhere in the area has a 10 ply tire in my size. All anyone has are 4-ply tires rated at 2600 lbs. I'm afraid its not going to be enough for my purposes.. there was one pair that would possibly work, they were nitto terra grapplers, which is what i have now, just a more beefed up version, the problem is they are a 35" tall tire, im not sure they would fit without rubbing really bad.

*edit- and they are $2000 installed for a set of 4.. if im going to spend that kind of money, i might as well get some bad a** black rims and a sweet set of tires..

My 05 has the tow package and has 18" wheels. It came from the factory with LT275/65/18's. I think that's about a 31 inch tire. Talked one time about going to a 17 inch wheel but with the tow package I have to run 18's because it has a bigger rotor. I'm with you, for 2 g's id run LT BFG KO2's and some nice wheels. KO2's are just over a 1000 at Costco.

The rotor statement is not true. Even the heavy duty 7 lug truck ran 17" rims. Andy 04-08 truck can run 17" wheels.
