tow package upgrades
Ok, so I just bought my first f150 and am looking to push this truck to it's towing limits (according to the guy at ford my trailer weight should not exceed 6100 lbs if the truck has a tow package on it). The truck came with absolutely no towing options (not even a trailer hitch). So my question is what should I be upgrading? Is the upgraded transmission cooler and radiator an absolute must? And are these upgrades very difficult for a do it yourselfer, or better left to a professional? Here are the specs on my truck.

XLT, 150" wheelbase, 4.6L
3.73 rear axle ratio, 18" wheels
Thanks

Check out http://www.ford.com/assets/pdf/towing/07RVTTgdeMay07.pdf page 14 of the pdf. F150 w/535 otion package (Hi Cap Tow Package) in addition to 7/4pin trailer coupler (wire connection) and factory hitch it has 9 channel Aux Tarns cooler vs standard 4 channel and upgraded radiator. The "GUY" was actually wrong. If you read carefull the pdf 1st you will find that Ford does not recommed towing over 5000lbs if you do not have the additioanl towing package equipment. With tow package and your setup your max would be 6600lbs. In al reality you can do what you want, however legally your max weight is determined by your GCWR (gross combination weighth rating) which should be on your door stick with GVWR, etc. And in your case it should read 12,200. This would be trucks + people + gear in truck + trailer + gear in trailer = GCWR. To get the max tow rating for a 2008 F150 you need a regular cab XL with the 5.4L, 144" wheelbase and the tire have to be the LT245/70R17E. The 18inch rims actually knock off 500 lbs in payload and tow capacity.
