Default Tire Sizing / Verification

First of all, hello! I have been lurking here for a few days trying to do proper research.

I need new tires. I pretty much only drive on the highway / streets...maybe 1% off road (mud or dirt roads in good condition). Don't ever tow. Any hauling in the bed is light weight. I am going with the Michelin Defender LTX M/S 265/70R17 (not the Load E version, as I do not think that is needed).

My current tires are the above size, but the sticky at the top seems to be contradictory. It states, "On a stock truck without leveling kit you can run 33X12.5 tires if it is a 4WD and 31X12.5 tires if it is a 2WD, using stock wheels." I have stock wheels (I think) and no leveling kit (again, as far as I know). I did not buy the truck new. The truck is 2wd though: 2005 XLT-Triton Crew Cab (that's 4 normal doors correct?). When I convert metric to inches, my current tires would not line up with the above (they come to 32x10.43).

Obviously, I will go to the shop and have them put the tires on and check rub, but before I spend the time I was hoping for any possible insight. Also, if I have not done well re tire selection, I am open to advice on that front too.

Thank you.

That is the OEM tire size for this truck. The 265 70 R17s were put on some time after I bought the truck because the OEM size looked too small for my tastes. My current tires have no issue rubbing etc., so unless there is a tire size difference with the Michelin's (mine are KUMO, not sure on the exact model - I will look in the morning) or other reason to change, I would prefer to make a straight swap, size wise.

I show 265/70R17 = 31.6x10.4 which is nearly the same as your measurement but slightly smaller. Also the 10.4 is quite a bit more narrow than the 12.5 max stated in the sticky. The more narrow tire could be why it fits without rubbing.

You’ll be fine with any 265/70r17 on your stock 2wd.

If that tire is already working for you then I don't see what the issue is.
