ya'll are lucky... here in CA, we can't have ANY tint on the front windows (except for maybe the "factory tint"... but if the CHP wants to get technical, even THAT is illegal) lol. I have 15% on the front and 5% on the back... thankfully, I haven't been pulled over yet... lol

One thing to consider when tinting is respect for the police officer that may have to pull over a vehicle. While I assume we on this forum are all "law obeying" citizens, put yourself in their shoes. When they pull a vehicle over, they never know who is behind the wheel; a crook, you or I, a grandmother on her way home from church, or some escaped convict that just robbed a bank. Now picture the stolen car or truck they are in has illegal tint on it's windows. Would you want to walk up to that car/truck, not being able to see into the vehicle?

My truck has tinting on the driver/passenger and back windows. It's the legal percentage allowed, and it does a great job of reducing the sun and heat in the cab.

I mention this only because I have some good friends in law inforcement. They have families with young children. While I may not expect to be pulled over by a police officer, there's a chance that my truck gets stolen or carjacked, and that's why I'm willing to accept the window tinting issue.

If you have no tint on the back window now, then I would def go with 5%. I have stock 20% on the back and it is not very dark. I am putting another layer of 20% on and leave the front windows 35% (driver/Passenger) and leave the stock 20% on the rear doors. That should make things pretty dark all around and here in Maine it is all legal.

So is the stock tint that comes on most truck and SUV back windows %20? If so then im stuck between 20 and 5 on the back, I really the best sun protection but I want to be able to see enough through the rear view. I just like to see how close cars driving behind me are, I live directly off of a 55mph highway and cars are usually doing 60+ when I am slowing down to turn... and I was in a bad rearender (even after seeing them coming) and am a little paranoid about that.

I agree with most of the post saying the factory 20% isn't dark enough. The one thing to keep in mind about stacking tint on factory tint is the glare at night is really bad. You end up seeing the radio, instruments and any other lighted object in the back window and the rear view mirror. I did it to a truck I use to have and vowed to never do that again. It looks cool, but damn if it ain't hard to see out of at night!

Here's a pic of my 20% with factory tint on all the back windows. It was a very sunny day also.

So true i got 5% stacked on top of the stock back tint and i don't even use the rearview at night or look out the back for that matter. i typicaly just use the side mirrors to back up and if there isn't very good light outside, i sometimes have to roll my windows down! lol but it don't bother me that much i think it looks cool!
