He's gonna start with the well over-due spark plugs to see if the miss and rough idle goes away. If not, I'll have him test the phaser solenoids next. If the phaser's are sure enough the issue, he wants to swap it all out with a new assembly with phaser lock-outs and a tune from a hand held tuner. He said he's done several so far and everyone loves it, so I think I may go that route.

Just glad I found a mechanic that doesn't try to sell me a new engine without even looking at it.... I'll keep you posted.
just be careful.. otherwise you will be sinking 1500-3k into parts trying to fix a motor that has had piston slaped or something and in the end you're upside down 5k cause you had to put a motor in it

you need to find the real issue first before throwing parts. take plugs out inspect the pistons etc

Agreed. He hasn't started on it yet, I dropped it off late Friday. I'll ask him to do a visual when the plugs are out and compression test. Thanks.

Got the truck back today. Everything looks and runs well and he replaced two coils and 8 plugs. He said I definitely have a lot of phaser noise but it's not affecting the way it runs. I decided to stick with what I have for now.

Sorry this all turned out to be something so stupid simple. I just keep expecting the worst since the mileage is starting to be on the high end.

Thanks guys for the conversation. I'll be looking into new phasers once I get out of this apartment and in a house. Our Accord is the main commuter so maybe the truck will be fine for a while....

I would go with a livernois lock out kit and get another 100k out of it.

Update. I started getting a bad chain rattle on cold starts that went on for over 5 seconds which seems like eternity and would rattle at 1500-1800 rpm always. Took it to the ford guru and went ahead with the timing chain overhaul with lockouts. They showed me the old parts. Both guides were broken and they said it had jumped a tooth at some point. It runs much better and no more rattling. Happy customer. I'm at 205k miles, if I can get 75k more then sell, it'd be a perfect time for a 3/4 ton to pull the camper a bit easier. Thx again guys for the help back in April!

It was $2029 total. If I only get 1 more year out of it it's still cheaper than a newer truck haha
