Ticking and pinging under load sometimes
I have a 2006 F150 Lariat SuperCrew with a 5.4 L EFI V8 Engine. The truck has the electric 4X4 selection system. The truck has about 175,000 miles on it. I use the truck for short trips to the lumber store, and we plow a private driveway in the winter with a Western snow blade. The previous owner used it for long road trips.
The truck has begun to make a kind of loud Ticking, Tapping, or Pinging noise - under load - like going up a hill. At idle or fast idle there is no noise. The ticking/pinging begins immediately after starting SOMETIMES and can last for many miles. OR - on another start there is NO NOISE at all and trips for miles have no noise. I filled the truck with 91 octane ethanol-free gas and it made no difference. I have no data to suggest why the noise is there sometimes, and not there another time.
What can cause a loud ticking/pinging - only under load - and only sometimes?

Floor it. Load it up. Run I-24 from Chattanooga to Nashville and back...
about four cycles of heavy acceleration up to 60mph, and then heavy breaking down to about 10mph, back-to-back-to-back will sort out all kinds of ills caused by 'being nice to your vehicle'.
Church girls with Chevy Aveos scream at you while you do this to their cars, but then thank you afterwards. And then a month later it's the same problems... *sigh*
