Default thinking out loud

so, i have been reading about how these trucks are getting a lot of build up inside the intake manifold. it seems many people have had great success with seafoam or carb cleaner.

well i am an engineering student and i am never satisfied with things being the way they are, i want to fix the cause not the symtom. so i started thinking about what is causing that buildup.

here is my thought, the build up is oil vapor from the crank case, it gets there via the pcv valve. i know on the powerstroke this caused performance problems after a while and diesels would be the engine that could handle the vapor with no problem.

on the diesels its not a big issue to fix since you just change the pcv to a road draft tube and the problem is resolved. on a gas engine i dont know if this is a good idea. so im thinking why not put a catch can inline with the pcv? everytime you change the oil it can be cleaned out really easy.

poking around a few internet sites i found a company that makes one for the vetts, since apparently they have a severe problem with blowby. i also found a nice looking little air oil seperator made by steeda for the mustang for about 75 bucks.

when i get my truck next week i plan on cleaning the intake and then installing one of these to see how well it works, but i want to know what ya'll think about this idea.

Visit JLT. Great information and products. I chose it over Steeda. Some people believe just to go a get a $10 water separator from home depot or lowes. You know with the glass bowels.....

I put my oil separator inline on my blown Harley truck which doesn't see to many miles. Even so, you can see where the vapors are building up at the bottom of the separator.

Most recently I was cleaning the TB on my 08 retired P71 cop car and boy it was filthy too. I may be putting on one it as well. I like toys.

i like that unit too. the steeds unit is just like you described with the glass bowl. what i like about that is it lets you see how much has been trapped.

how many people have done this sort of mod? i ask cause i have not seen many comments on it when i thought i would. to me having to clean the intake track regularly like that would get annoying. especially when its such an easy fix to prevent it.

Proof is in the pudding errrrr oil separator. I just pulled my JLT Oil Separator and this is what I caught. I have put approx. 500 miles on the truck since install.

i finally got my truck and have been looking at it. the main pcv line is obvious on the driver side valve cover, but it looks like another one on the passenger side too. it does seem that the passenger side doesnt introduce any oil. is that true? do i need to seperators?

You do realize that the oiling system on the LS series of motors in the Vette is a dry sump system as apposed to the wet sump systems in virtually every other motor.
