Default thermometer is screwy

Is it normal for the dash thermometer on my '06 to read a temp alot higher than it actually is outside when starting it after sitting a while?

Like earlier it was only in the 60's and cloudy but when I started the truck it read 81*. It leveled out to the right temp a mile or so down the road.

Is that the way its supposed to be?

Can't speak specifically for your vehicle, but others I've driven with the temperature feature exhibit the same tendencies.

The first reading will be static temp. form sitting inthe sun. Once you go down the road it cool off to actual temp...........alll is normal.

Also keep in mind the location of the temp sensor; it is centrally located in front of the radiator. Pop the hood, locate the vertical piece of metal in front of the radiator (hood latch is mounted on it).

Then you'll understand why the temps can be a bit "off".
